MattC

I have a house, a job, a car, a wife, a baby daughter, a bunch of pets, and now I’ll have some comics…my plan for slowly dominating the globe is precisely on track!

new job, more money, less time

Like a lot of people, and therefore I assume, a lot of Inkers (edit: did I just imply Inkers aren’t people? Not intended!), my bank account doesn’t have a mutant regenerative ability, so I’ve been on the lookout for a career change as of late, and last Friday it happened – I was hired to teach 6th grade math and science, doubling my previous income (you know things were shaky when becoming a teacher is a huge step up, pay-wise) – we’re talking tens of thousands of dollars more per year…which means I’ve got a nice cash infusion to sink into comics, yeah?

Yeah…

I also now have exponentially less time to spend with said comics…between a 7 month certification program, planning for my daily classes, etc.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m very excited and grateful that life has taken this turn, but…

It’s like the sea-scarred hand of Irony has risen from it’s abyssal depths and slapped me, like Col. Gathers did to one Brock Samson in last week’s Venture Bros episode, not only reddening my cheek, but getting some of that good sea salt in there for good measure – YOU BRINY BASTARD!

Wow…don’t ask

and for the record – I’m no fan of math or science (as it’s taught in middle school at least) but I passed the subject exams, and I like having a job, so…yeah.

Contract

I was very impressed by issue 1 of this title. Smart writing, interesting stories, etc etc. I’d check it out if I were you, if you were me…

the conundrum...

I love weeks when I get 5+ floppies…except that it means a few extra days shipping time. That’s not the sound of me bitching – I know I could switch to the paid shipping and eliminate the problem, but the free shipping was the hook that got me here, so I’m “dancin’ with the one what brung me,” and I’m not such a huge comixguy that I have to have them, like, yesterday – or else I’d be hitting up the local shops instead of using HI…plus my wife’d probably shiv me if I spent any more than I already do on the books.

Still…got a big order on the way with some stuff I’m really looking forward to, and it’s already a day behind because of the 4th – I just hope it comes during the week so I’ve got some reading material for the beach vacation the week after next…

hrmmm. May need to re-evaluate...

I wouldn’t think it’d be possible to be Wash and Zoe at the same time…they’re just the slightest bit different from each other, if by slightest bit I mean completely and totally. Interesting.

Amazin' Spidey 560...

arrr, there be spoilers ahead…

Even though the Spidey braintrust dropped an overwhelming amount of heavyhanded hints about the character making her return in 560, it had still slipped my mind until the last panel of the next to last page…I started to turn it, thinking “It’s MJ…it’s MJ…it’s MJ,” and…it was MJ!

Nice little twist to the end of “Flat Out Crazy.” I haven’t been real fond, overall, of the art in 559/560, though it has had it’s moments, and as far as new characters go, I can do without Paper Doll…interesting concept, but doesn’t translate all that well to the paper page. Screwball was a touch more interesting, and I think she could be a recurring figure along the lines of Black Cat, where she’s not really “evil” and not always an enemy.

So with MJ back, and some Kraven and Venom stuff in the pipes, and Romita starting his run soon, it’s looking like a superb Spidey summer (certainly better than last summer, when Spider-Man 3 did quite a lot of damage to the Spideyverse IMHO)

Final Boarding Call...

...for Invincible Iron Man #1. If your travel plans today do not include IIM#1, I highly suggest you alter your plans.

this is the first Fraction-written book I’ve read, and I’m pretty damn sure he’s now my favorite writer. Well done!

OMD...OMG

The trade hardcover for One More Day arrived last weekend via Amazon, and after the first reading, I really didn’t care for the arc at all, and after the second reading, I found some parts I liked or at least felt were well done, but in general, I still don’t care for the overall plot of the story.

I’d almost put it up there with Spiderman 3 in terms of how much it made me dislike Peter Parker. If I had picked up these books when they were first released, I may have not gotten back into comics as much as I have, if at all. Thankfully, I’m enjoying Brand New Day and all of the other titles I’ve come across since getting comically involved again.

Added to the subscriptions...

Ok, I’m taking the bait on Atomic Robo – really enjoyed the issue I grabbed today for FCBD, so I’ll pick up all the others now.

This was really the first book since I got back into books that I’ve noticed how good the art is – it’s just so pleasing to look at.

All Star Superman was great, so I gotta grab the trades – and the X-Men special issue was good as well, I may have to get back into that one at some point.

The two Hellboy books I picked up were, as expected, full of awesome.

And, because I felt a little bad about just walking in and grabbing the gratis stuff, I purchased issued 3-5 of Marvel Zombies 2, and the MZ Sketchbook

oh absolutely, it’s very well done. A second season is supposed to air this Fall. Looking forward to it. :)

as I said, my 4yo is a big fan and while I’ve almost never sat down to watch an episode by myself, I’ve seen most of them. Good retelling of the Spidey mythos for today’s kids in my opinion…

I love, love, love that new avatar of yours, the Venom of Spectacular Spider-Man. :) Are you a fan of the show? Both my sons love it, but my four year old is really into it. I cut the ads from the first 13 episodes that I had recorded as they came on and put them on three separate DVDs, they are in regular rotation at our house… :)

Blurb reply with your email address and we’ll work out shipping those bags & boards.

If “Threads” were one of the options you could choose to make lists of, I’d have a list of my favorite HI forum threads, and this would be in the top 5 at least three times.

That… is freaking awesome. I’m going to make that possible. I swear it.

Curse you for your awesome entry in the Zango contest.

Nice avatar.

By the way, I live in Arlington, MA – just outside of Boston. ...and that’s where the guy who built the LED Mooninite that caused the bomb scare lives too.

About a week ago I was walking down a sidewalk, and I saw him.

I sounded like a bit of a dork, but I asked “Uh – hey! You’re the Aqua Teen guy, right?”

He said “yes”, and I said “nice work!”.

That’s my little story.

Hah. Excellent new avatar. Never forget. :P

Thanks for the link! That is really good news, as Romita Jr is on of my favorite artists.

I’m very much impressed by the series at this point. I read somewhere, though, that John Romita Jr. is scheduled to draw ASM at some point this year. I hope that’s true!

Recent Reviews

Awhile back, I asked in the HI forums for suggestions about something new, and laid out a really odd set of features/characteristics I wanted to find in a book, and someone suggested grabbing Contract when it came out, so I subscribed, got the zero issue and was suitably impressed. Issue 1 came the other day and hit all the points I wanted. The characters are well-conceived and interesting, the stories are engaging and the writing is top-notch. If you like you action/comedy/sci-fi mixed with some comedy/sci-fi/action and topped off with some sci-fi/action/comedy, well, you ought to give Contract a look. Yes, there are death-dealing robots…but they’re death-dealing robots with issues, the kind you can laugh at without feeling like you’re headed for eternal damnation. Inside the front cover of issue 1 was a detailed description of the Contract ‘verse (literally!) and it’s plain to see from the thought that went into that, a great new comic follows.
