Wasteland is not a bad comic. It’s got an interesting premise at least and the art is nice to look at. That said, I can’t tell what the heck is going on. The story jumps around all over the place, and I can’t tell who’s who. The art is difficult to comprehend since every one looks exactly the same. It’s not just the faces look the same as he does a decent job of differentiating what people look like up close, but in group shots every one is wearing the same kind of dirty clothes and have hoods on. Maybe if heavyink had #1 I could have understood the story a little more, but it’s hard to imagine the art being a whole lot better at the beginning of the series and I’ve never had a problem jumping on in the middle of a book and not understanding what’s going on.
It’s fitting that most of Wasteland is spent wandering lost in a desert. After a promising, adventurey first issue, the characters get bogged-down with soap-opera dialogue and a plot that takes forever to unfold.
It’s a neat concept—post-apocalyptic humanity rebuilds amongst deserts and zombies, in a sort of magical wild-west. So why doesn’t anyone DO anything? It’s all talk talk talk and virtually no decisions, no choices, no momentum.
I’m dropping this title after 25 issues. I have been having a hard time with the art- often hard for me to tell characters apart. I was hanging on due to the depth of the story and the detail in thw world building. However, this past arc seems to have gone way off the rails- the main characters appear as a footnote, and the characters we spent 18 issues with are gone. Maybe this “Dog Arc” will tie into the larger story later but I’ve lost interest. I’ll pick up the trade collecting the next arc- I think I’ll like this title better as trades.
