Customer Reviews
Wow- with all the hype of this book claiming to be the “definitive graphic novel” I was really rather disappointed. The ending made up for the majority of the story which I found to be mostly filler, like a really long movie before it goes to the editor. I found this book sort of painful to read as to the content, but the ending has left me with questions, and maybe I’ll need to review the last two chapters before fully understanding the story’s end. Decent book, but definitely not amazing.
Good book. It was everything that the critics made it out to be. A lot of reading in dialogue that you don’t think is important, but you find really holds a purpose in the ending.
Watchmen gets loved and hated on pretty equally among readers. I fall into the former category, and I absolutely loved the book from beginning to end. It’s a pretty long book but it’s worth really giving it your all and really getting into the book. I haven’t read all of Alan Moore’s work, but I’ve read a fair amount and this rank up there on the list along with V for Vendetta and From Hell. Disregard any movie hype or hate and grab this book, clear some space on your schedule and enjoy it.
Its been a while since I’ve read this but a few things come to mind in reflection.
This is not meant for the casual reader. If you aren’t up for reading fictional newspaper articles or a serious sunday comic about a pirate losing his mind (each being interspersed within the main tale) THEN you probably shouldn’t attempt this book until you can stomach that.
While I read the book each article/pirate story seemed like a speedbump in the middle of the story. I was often tempted to skip over them (and often skipped the articles to be honest)
Each character in the book gets their own spotlight time and given that there are quite a few you may not like a few of the chapters.
The monster at the end is the only truly distasteful moment I really had with the overall tale. I felt at the time that I was reading a serious story about a majority of themes and ethical dilemmas and then plop right towards the end there’s a giant plant monster or something.
This book had its ups and downs with me. I would not say it was bad and I wouldn’t say I didn’t like it but I really did not particularly care for it and is not in my eyes the classic so many have made it out to be.

the more you read it the better it is. there is a ton of depth to every dialogue. i was a little disappointed the first time i got through it. it’s much better the second time around haha.
